Laboratories Developed at NIT Silchar
1. Condition Monitoring Laboratory
The condition monitoring laboratory was established in 2021 at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, NIT Silchar. The laboratory was established to conduct cutting-edge research in sensor development, condition monitoring, product prototyping, and development. The laboratory has bagged several externally funded research projects and produced several scholars, including Ph.D., M. Tech. and B. Tech.
2. Advanced Joining Laboratory
The advanced joining laboratory was established in 2021 at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, NIT Silchar. The laboratory was established to conduct cutting-edge research in sensor development, condition monitoring, product prototyping, and development. The laboratory has bagged several externally funded research projects and produced several scholars, including Ph.D., M. Tech. and B. Tech.
Current Ph.D. openings
The advanced joining laboratory at NIT Silchar is looking for potential Ph.D. candidates in the following areas.
- Thin Layer Material Deposition: In many engineering applications, surface modifications and repair are critical tasks. To modify or repair the existing surface on high-performance system components, a thin layer of material deposition is made to improve the life of the product surface for better engineering performance. The challenges in thin material deposition are controlled temperature between the substrate and deposited material, properties of the deposited material before and after deposition, alloying characteristics, retention of the parent material properties, etc. To address the above challenges, the current research is motivated by finding effective solutions to develop technologies for efficient material deposition methods using alternative systems.
-
Design and development of FSAM tool: The current manufacturing process has rapidly shifted towards the additive manufacturing domain. Various research activities have been conducted to develop systems and processes for improving additive manufacturing processes for industrial applications. By its various advantages, the friction stir welding process can perform additive manufacturing applications with minor modifications to the existing equipment. The current research attempts to develop a new and innovative system for performing the powder-based additive manufacturing of metallic materials using the friction stir welding setup.
-
Friction stir mechanical clinching: The clinching is an interesting mechanical joining process to obtain both temporary and permanent joints in the metallic components. The traditional clinching process is limited by high mechanical stress and is prone to material failure due to improper parameter selection. The friction stir welding process can be tuned to perform the clinching operation on the metallic materials to improve the process. The current research will address the issues in the conventional clinching process and will be driven to develop a friction stir welding-based clinching process for the material joining.
The condition monitoring laboratory at NIT Silchar is looking for potential Ph.D. candidates in the following areas.
-
Flexible force and torque sensor: Sensor development is an interesting field in engineering. The current opening is for developing a flexible sensor system to monitor the forces and torque during the friction stir welding process. The system under development is innovative in simultaneously measuring forces and torque during welding.
-
Free field temperature monitoring: During additive manufacturing applications, temperature monitoring may fetch critical information about the process’s performance. However, no sufficient systems are available to perform the same to date. The available systems mostly include camera-based monitoring, which is way too costly for many small-scale applications. To address this issue, a free field temperature monitoring system would be of great interest to monitor the real-time temperature in additive manufacturing applications.
