About The Department

Situated in the rolling landscapes of Assam, the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at NIT Silchar offers a rich intellectual environment for exploring the many dimensions of human experience. Since its inception in 1967, the department has been devoted to academic inquiry, committed to understanding the intricacies of human thought, culture, economy, and society. Immersed in the cultural richness of Northeast India, the department integrates the domains of humanities and social sciences to create intense, contemplative inquiry into the world.

With an interdisciplinary approach, the faculty members and research scholars of the department merge analytical precision with interpretative acuity. In literary studies, they work with texts that represent the human condition through time and space. Within the domain of Economics, the department examines the underlying patterns, laws, policies, and principles that shape human behaviour, market structures, and developmental processes—illuminating the roles of institutions, belief systems, historical trajectories, and everyday socio-economic practices. The department's instruction and research traverse a wide spectrum, ranging from the subtleties of literary style to the intricacies of economic systems, fostering a rich interdisciplinary culture that encourages the scholars to critically analyse and interpret the dynamics of literary and cultural production reflected in today’s socio-economic realm. By encouraging students and scholars to think outside traditional boundaries, we challenge prevailing wisdom and make significant contributions to current debates in the humanities and social sciences. We value nuance over certainty, dialogue over dogma, and reflection over rhetoric.
