Research Group
- The main focus of our research group is to develop functional supramolecular polymers (with or without coordinated metal ions), that shows applications in optoelectronics, chiral catalysis, semi-conducting and molecular switching. At the initial stage rationally designed molecules (small organic molecules or discrete metal complexes) are synthesized following multi-step organic synthesis and are characterized thoroughly using advanced analytical techniques, such as NMR, MS, FTIR etc. Self-assembly of targeted molecules are studied in aqueous or organic solvent system using UV/Vis, emission, FTIR spectroscopy. Self-assembly mechanism and pathway complexity of targeted molecules are systematically explored by solvent-dependent 1D-and 2D NMR, solvent -dependent UV-Vis, variable-temperature UV/Vis spectroscopy and microscopic (AFM, SEM, TEM) studies. Detailed self-assembly and co-assembly studies are carried out to gain insight of the structure-property relationship in controlling pathway complexity, morphology and functionality of supramolecular polymers and co-polymers respectively. On the other hand, our group is also involved in synthesising coordination polymer gels and metallogels by coordination driven self-assembly of pre-synthesized organic molecules. These functional materials are explored as stimuli-responsive optoelectronic and semi-conducting materials, chiral catalysis, molecular machines etc.

PROJECTIntroduction [Biosketch]
- Dr. Papri Sutar was born and brought up in Kolkata, India. She obtained her secondary (10th) and higher secondary education from Garia Harimati Devi Uchcha Balika Vidyalaya. She received her bachelor degree (B.Sc.) in Chemistry from University of Calcutta in 2010. She obtained her master’s degree (M.Sc.) from the Department of Chemistry, Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, in 2012. Later, she went to Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR), Bangalore from where she received her PhD degree under the supervision of Prof. Tapas Kumar Maji in 2018. After completing her Ph.D., she worked as Postdoctoral Research Associate in the research group of Dr. John G. Hardy at Lancaster University in United Kingdom till August, 2019. Later she moved to University of Muenster in Germany where she worked as an Alexander von Humboldt Postdoctoral Fellow with Prof. Gustavo Fernández till October, 2023. She received a number of prestigious fellowships (Internationalization fund, Stipend for Postdoc, Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship) during her research stay at University of Muenster. She joined the Department of Chemistry, NIT Silchar in November, 2023.
Areas of Interest
- Our research interests lie in the interface of organic synthesis and material chemistry. Controlling the self-assembly of small molecules in solution state plays the pivotal role in determining morphology and functionality of soft supramolecular materials. We aim to develop new functional supramolecular materials for targeted applications, including optoelectronics, catalysis, semi-conducting and molecular switching. Following points summarize our research interest:
- • Synthesizing metallosupramolecular polymers, coordination polymer gels, soft organic-inorganic hybrid materials.
- • Controlling self-assembly and co-assembly in aqueous or organic solvent system.
- • Investigating the underlaying self-assembly mechanism and pathway complexity.
- • Developing stimuli-responsive optoelectronic and semi-conducting materials
- • Chiral supramolecular polymer for catalysis.
