About NIT Silchar
National Institute of Technology (NIT) Silchar, an
Institute of National Importance under the NIT Act,
was established in 1967 as Regional Engineering
College (REC) Silchar in Assam. In year 2002, it
was upgraded to the status of an NIT from REC.
NIT Silchar is situated on the banks of river Barak
and on a sprawling campus spread over 600 acres
of land on the outskirts of Silchar city. It is strewn with beautiful lakes and hillocks. NIT Silchar is a
fully residential Institution. At present it offers six
undergraduate courses in Engineering, and a number
of Post-Graduate courses in the civil, mechanical,
electrical, electronics & telecommunication and
computer science engineering.
The Department of Civil Engineering started its journey in 1977. Ever since the inception, it has been imparting quality education to under graduate students. The Department presently fosters five PG programs viz. Structural Engineering, Structural Dynamics & Earthquake Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Transportation Engineering and, Water Resource Engineering. A good number of research scholars are carrying out research in various fields. There are about a dozen laboratories with various research and testing facilities. The faculty comprises of eminent specialists from diverse fields. The vision of the Department of Civil Engineering is to achieve unique identity by development of knowledge resources and highly competent Civil Engineers in various fields of Civil Engineering to meet local, national, and global economic and social needs.
NIT Silchar has been ranked 46th in the country in Engineering category by NIRF 2020. NIT Silchar has been ranked in the rank band 601-800 for Engineering in the prestigious Times Higher Education World University Ranking in 2021. NIT Silchar is ranked at 6th in India and 275 in UI GreenMetric World University Rankings 2020.
