The National Institute of Technology, Silchar was established in the year 1967. Bachelor of engineering classes was started from the academic session 1977-78 and the institute was established under the Gauhati University. NIT Silchar,was started with a vision of providing better education opportunities in north-east. Ever since the commencement of this institute, its allure has grown man folds. It has proved to be one of the finest forum for education in north-east and continued to exhilarate its reputation. Finest of the technical brains have passed out from this institution and have proved their credibility in different organizations for many years. Determination and hard work of our faculty members and students have fortified the institution over the years and still continuing the same.

 

Few of the developments that have taken place in this college over the years are:

 

•From 2004-2005 academic session,M.Tech and Ph-D programmes have started in the institute.

•Every year, NIT Silchar organizes a technical festival ‘Tecnoesis’ and a cultural festival ‘Incandescence’ organized by the Gymkhana Committee.

•The Industry Institute partnership Cell (IIPC) was set up in the year 2009 to help bridge the gap between the engineering colleges and industries.

•The Institute of electrical and electronics engineers (IEEE) chapter has been set up in our college, which exposes our college to the new and emerging technological advances happening around the globe. Seminars, workshops, interactive sessions with renowned personalities form a part of this chapter.

•Our college, today, is home to more than 2000 students who reside in hostels. There are 8 boys’ hostels and 2 girls’ hostels. The new 8th hostel is a state-of-the-art hostel with ultra-modern facilities.

•New Guest houses, new constructional galleries with two mini auditoriums add to the blooming infrastructure of the college. A new, separate sports complex has also been proposed
